The Great Books Foundation is partnering with the Chicago Humanities Festival to present Great Books discussions. The entire event runs from October 3 until November 16, 2008 at various locations throughout Chicago, and the festival's theme is ''Thinking Big.''
On Sunday, November 9, 2008 the Foundation's Daniel Born will moderate a panel discussion titled "An Enduring Idea: The Great Books Movement." The discussion will run from 3:30-5 p.m. in the Cindy Pritzker Auditorium of the Harold Washington Library Center. Admission is $5.
Panelists include Alex Beam, Boston Globe columnist and author of the fortcoming book A Great Idea at the Time: The Rise, Fall, and Curious Afterlife of the Great Books; Eva Brann, former dean and tutor at St. John's College, Annapolis; and Earl Shorris, contributing editor to Harper's and founder of the Clemente Course in the Humanities. These contemporary writers will discuss the Great Books movement?how it's changed and where it's going.
