Join fellow teachers and Great Books Foundation instructors for a residential three-day workshop in the Shared Inquiry method of learning, on the Santa Fe campus of St. John’s College, renowned for its Great Books curriculum. (Visit the St. John's College site for information about the college.)

Whether you teach middle school or high school students, English/language arts or social studies, Shared Inquiry can help you find new and more effective ways to improve your students’ reading comprehension and critical thinking as they search for deeper meanings in literary and primary source documents. Though the Summer Institute is primarily designed for those who have never been in a Great Books Foundation training course, teachers who have practiced Shared Inquiry and want to refresh their approach are welcome to attend.

The Summer Institute is an opportunity to participate in an intensive, extended version of the Foundation’s core sequence of professional development courses. The three-day program will consist of rigorous training in Shared Inquiry classroom practices, focused on the art of asking questions.

Shared Inquiry leadership development activities include:

  • Demonstration Shared Inquiry discussions led by experienced Great Books Foundation instructors
  • Preparation of and practice leading a Shared Inquiry discussion
  • Classroom strategies to improve students' reading comprehension, critical thinking, and writing skills
  • A seminar on a Great Books selection related to education conducted by St. John’s faculty
  • Small group activities customized for your objectives, for example, assessment criteria, curriculum planning, Shared Inquiry with nonfiction, etc.
  • Opportunities to raise questions and exchange ideas with other dedicated educators in interactive classroom and small group settings

Registration fee: $725 (early registration by June 15, 2008, is only $650)

The registration fee includes a single or double room (your choice) on the beautiful St. John’s College campus overlooking historic Santa Fe, New Mexico, two meals a day, all-day sessions with Great Books Foundation instructors, an evening seminar with St. John’s faculty, and a reception on Sunday evening.
