Training for Parent Volunteers

Parent Leader Training Course (PLTC)

This course is designed for parents and other volunteers who will use Junior Great Books as a discussion-only enrichment program, conducted outside the regular classroom. For those with limited time, this course provides a basic introduction to the Shared Inquiry method of discussing literature.

Course activities include:

  • a demonstration of Shared Inquiry discussion
  • practice identifying and writing effective discussion questions
  • practice using follow-up questions to help students develop their own ideas in discussion
  • answers to practical questions about running a volunteer-led Junior Great Books program

This is a five-hour course, and participants should bring a lunch or snack.

This course is not appropriate for teachers and other educators who plan to use Junior Great Books as part of students' educational program. No time will be devoted to matters such as the use of Junior Great Books interpretive activities to engage students of varying ability levels, the fit between Junior Great Books and state standards, research on program effectiveness, or practical matters such as classroom management or student assessment. Please see the description of our Shared Inquiry Leader Workshop–-Level I for information on workshops for educators. Teachers will not be admitted to this course.
