Parent Leader Training Workshop

This course is designed for parents and other volunteers who will use Junior Great Books as a discussion-only enrichment program, conducted outside the regular classroom. For those with limited time, this course provides a basic introduction to the Shared Inquiry method of discussing literature.

This course is for parent volunteers and is not appropriate for teachers.*  Course activities include:

  • a demonstration of Shared Inquiry discussion
  • practice identifying and writing effective discussion questions
  • practice using follow-up questions to help students develop their own ideas in discussion
  • answers to practical questions about running a volunteer-led Junior Great Books program

This is a five-hour course, and participants should bring a lunch or snack.

Instilling a Love of Reading in the Home

*Please note: This course is not appropriate for teachers and other educators who plan to use Junior Great Books in the classroom. No time is devoted to Junior Great Books interpretive activities, engaging students of varying ability levels, state standards, research on program effectiveness, classroom management, or student assessment. Teachers will not be admitted. Please see the description of our Core Sequence of Professional Development for information on workshops for educators.
