Shimer College Open House

Are you interested in a college with a Great Books curriculum? If so, register for an April 15 Open House at Chicago’s Shimer College, a partner institution to the Great Books Foundation.

Shimer offers a curriculum which is 65% core courses, reading a wide array of Great Books, and 35% electives (film, feminist philosophy, community development, and much more). All Shimer classes read primary sources together in a discussion-based pedagogy.

Shimer College offers substantial scholarships, including a visit scholarship. So:

  • Are you homeschooled now? If so, Shimer accepts special students who are qualified and you can take courses with them!
  • Are you a junior or senior in high school? The college is on a rolling admissions schedule and also accepts students after their junior year in high school.
  • Do you attend a community college? Shimer has great transfer pathways with many community colleges as well as dual enrollment with Chicagoland community colleges.
  • Are you 60 or over and live in Chicago? Ask about the program called Shimer@60, in which you may take a course for free (though you must obtain your books).

In any of these cases, and even if you do not fit into these categories but are interested, check out the Shimer College website, or call 312-235-3555 or email them at admissions@shimer.edu.
