Checklist for Conducting Shared Inquiry Discussion

Before participating in a Shared Inquiry Discussion, students will need to read the story, or have it read to them, twice (see Lesson 4).

Arrange seating in a circle Determine group size Prepare a seating chart Explain the four rules Distribute the Building Your Answer form Pose an interpretive question (see Lesson 2) Give students ample time to reflect and write an answer Lead discussion by asking questions (see Lesson 3) End discussion after... Conduct a brief closing activity

5. Distribute the Building Your Answer form. A photocopy master of the Building Your Answer form is included in the Teacher's Editions and Leader's Guides for the Junior Great Books program. This form is a place for students to write down the question they will discuss and their answer to that question. Before discussion even begins, it is important for students to understand that there can be more than one good or valid answer to the question. This will help them feel free to try out ideas and explore an issue in depth.
