Strive for answers
Ask questions that help students relate their thinking to the question under discussion.
"Sulema, can you explain how your idea helps us answer the opening question?"
"Steven, does that idea support Miyako's answer to the opening question?"
Relating ideas to one another and to the initial question will give the discussion coherence and depth. Staying with a question until you believe the group has fully explored it will teach students to think through issues carefully and approach them from different angles.
