Dramatization
Many children love acting out a story. It is a way for them to recapture the pleasure of the story and share imaginatively in the characters' adventures. Dramatization activities can be used to help students make sense of important or difficult parts of the story in a way that is fun and enjoyable.
A typical dramatization activity might ask students to act out a scene, such as the encounter between Jack and the old man. Children are encouraged to think of different ways the characters might say their lines and the facial expressions and body language they might use. Such activities not only express students' understanding of the scene, but also become a dynamic process of thinking through the meaning of the scene and the story.
Suggested dramatization activities can be found in the Teacher's Editions for the Read-Aloud program and JGB Series 2.
