I’m thrilled that my book “Exquisite: The Poetry and Life of Gwendolyn Brooks” has been selected to be included in Junior Great Books Series 3. It’s exciting to imagine how Gwendolyn Brooks’s fascinating life journey marked by her persistence, kindness, hard work, and creativity will inspire young readers.

Stories are often based on childhood experiences—at least, this is what I discovered about my own literary work. “The Chicken That Crossed the Road” is autobiographical. And, lucky me, it’s a story featured in the Junior Great Books Inspire series. This has always been a secret plan of mine, to inspire readers, both children and adults, to write down their own stories.

Who would say NO to anything called Junior Great Books? It’s a gift to have a poem or story included anywhere, but with a shining series title like this—obviously yes!
