One Nation, Under Debate—A Panel Discussion
In partnership with the Union League Club of Chicago, we sponsor a series of panel discussions that bring together leading Chicago citizens to publicly discuss written works and their enduring ideas. We are excited to announce the third event in this ongoing series of public panel discussions: One Nation, Under Debate.
One Nation, Under Debate will be held on February 11, 2016, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Main Dining Room of the Union League Club of Chicago.
With the debates surrounding the national election year in full swing, our panel will focus their attention on an excerpt from George Washington’s Farewell Address. In this excerpt, he warns against the fragmentation of national unity inherent in party politics. Equally as fresh and provocative as today’s news, the alarm that Washington sounded in 1796 resonates loud and clear 220 years later. His words still raise for us fundamental questions about the nature and function of political parties in our country—questions that our panelists surely will address.
