What is SMART Saturday?
SMART Saturday is a unique academic and cultural enrichment program, enabling boys and girls in the City of Detroit to sharpen their academic skills and expand their intellectual horizons, even as they make new friends from many neighborhoods. Kids who love books, ideas and hearty conversations will engage with their peers as they explore the very best age-appropriate texts selected by a team of scholars, educators from the Detroit Public Library, The Detroit Latin and The Great Books Foundation.
Each book or anthology of readings will expose students to seminal authors and great writing. Along with the sheer enjoyment of reading, the goal of SMART Saturday will be to sharpen academic skills, expand vocabulary, explore key questions of life and society and enrich the moral imagination.
When will SMART Saturday be in session?
During this next school year, there will be two eight-week sessions of SMART Saturday. It is anticipated that, this unique program will become a Detroit tradition running conterminously with each academic year.
Session I – January 11th through February 29th
Session II – March 7th through April 25th
Who is encouraged to enroll?
SMART Saturday is for kids who love books. While the program is designed to provide the very best students with exposure to the very best books, we all know that “kids who love books,” includes many precocious boys and girls who, through no fault of their own, may currently have below grade level reading skills. They will be welcomed into each circle and provided with whatever tutorial help is needed.
Beginning in January of 2020, SMART Saturday will convene two eight-week sessions, each serving sixty boys and girls in grades K-6. Applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Parents are encouraged to sign up students for both sessions, which will be sequential and not repetitive. Both eight-week sessions will include a Primary SMART Session for thirty kids in grades K-3 and a Junior SMART Session for thirty students in grades 4-6.
Where will SMART Saturday be held?
Each session will be held at the Main Branch of The Detroit Public Library on Woodward Avenue in Midtown.
