Talking Service
Funded by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Talking Service is a reading and discussion program that uses powerful literature to help veterans in their transition back into civilian life. Participants discuss selections from Standing Down: From Warrior to Civilian, which features works ranging from Homer’s Iliad to personal accounts by members of the Armed Forces who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Through a partnership with the New York Council for the Humanities, Talking Service is expanding nationwide through state humanities councils, as well as at other host sites across the country. Some states that have recently signed on to host Talking Service programs include Georgia, New Mexico, Tennessee, Washington, and Montana.
