“War Vets Find Solace in Stories” from the Miami Herald

As the college student veteran population grows, many universities are developing programs to support their unique needs. For example, veteran students are more likely to have dependents, full-time jobs, and live far from campus—realities that bring additional pressure to student life. At Miami’s Florida International University (FIU), administrators decided our Talking Service reading and discussion program for veterans was the perfect addition to their offerings. The program was implemented last spring, and we’re happy to report it’s serving participants well—as one of them stated, “It helps that I’m not the only one thinking/feeling in similar ways.”Jessica L. Adler, FIU assistant professor in the departments of history and health policy and management, wrote an article, “War Vets Find Solace in Stories,” for the Miami Herald highlighting the program’s success.
